Tarot originated as an ancient card game. Tarot cards provide us with images and symbols, with which we can engage in a similar manner as with the images and symbols from dreams. These images access a part of personal truth that is difficult to put into words. Tarot assists them in getting to know themselves better. Each card, like art, has a distinct and personal message to each of us. Non-fungible, so to speak.
The first tarot cards appeared in the Renaissance period. They were painted in Milan and Bologna between 1430 and 1460 for great princely houses. The Renaissance period was a “melting pot”. The people wanted to escape from the dark Middle Ages. They were looking for new ways, for which they revived and rediscovered innumerable ancient traditions. The Tarot cards bring together a wealth of typical motifs, characters and life situations, and they reference many eras of cultural history, from the Renaissance back through the Middle Ages to antiquity and the times of the early Egyptians and Babylonians. We have to say goodbye to templates and sheer arbitrariness of interpretation. There are always two sides. If you want to realize your dreams, you cannot do so in a dream. And if we wish to realize our desires, we have to consider a reality, which is not our own, our home.
